It was only reconvening the Attractions for Brutal Youth the following year that gave his fans another glimpse of what first attracted them to him: punchy, angry pop songs, tightly played by an impeccably taut ensemble. Since then, Costello has become a career dilettante, true to his inner musical quest, but never again returning to heights he scaled in the early s.
This joint effort with Burt Bacharach matched restrained writing from Costello with stately Bacharach arrangements. Subsequent career nadirs such as the tune-free North , and instrumental orchestral works such as Il Sogno led many long-term admirers to conclude that Costello had retained his integrity at the expense of his real musical strengths.
However, he has given occasional evidence of his former fire. The ballsy bar-room atmosphere of the collaborative The Delivery Man , suggests that he is still capable of giving his fans what they want, in between his more esoteric experiments. Maybe somebody told him the name and he truly feels that he came about it by chance. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in He is a prominent philanthropist, football fan and vegetarian.

What does it prove? It proves that it hurts the animal. Very smart. It's unnecessary research. And I guess I did some unnecessary research for a while. Then I'd write something that would scare the hell out of me. Like there's a couple of songs on Get Happy!! And I thought, 'Uh-uh And it gets a bit fucking evil. It was difficult to develop an original style.
I have no idea who it was I might have been imitating, whether consciously or unconsciously. My mother tells the story of me bringing a 45 home and saying, 'It's unbreakable! I get to play festival occasions with an orchestra - a jazz orchestra or a symphony orchestra.
Believe me, that stops it from getting monotonous. Each performance requires slightly different dynamics really, really keeps the music from getting routine. Everything in show business is [theatrical] to a degree, you know. You don't go up there in your street clothes. Costello scored his first U.
