An AR Pistol is a pistol built on an AR action and receiver, but that is designed to be fired with one hand and not fired from the shoulder. AR Pistols do not have shoulder stocks and therefore were not designed to be fired from the shoulder. This means that they are in fact pistols, and not Short Barreled Rifles. By attempting to turn an AR into a pistol you will actually be creating a Short Barrel Rifle and run the risk of being in violation of Federal Law.
AR Pistols must be purchased as a pistol or built as a pistol from a new blank lower receiver that has never been built as a rifle. These grips are not permitted on a firearm classified as an AR pistol because the guns are intended for one-hand firing.
Knowing and conforming to these specifications is an important part of ensuring you're following the laws and regulations in place surrounding these two guns when you're building or buying your next AR Knowing the legal definitions of each firearm, the associated restrictions, and how your AR complies will save you a lot of legal headaches.
Firearms that comply with AR pistol standards are legal to own or build without any additional paperwork. Once you're approved, you'll need to file a Form 20 for approval any time you plan to cross state lines with your SBR. The AR pistol does not require permission to cross state lines. While these SBR restrictions can seem tedious, the process is fairly simple to navigate with a little guidance from your local ATF agent.
You'll fill out some forms in duplicate, get a signature from your local chief law enforcement officer and send everything in with fingerprint cards and passport-style photos for identification. You can use an AR pistol in whatever legal manner you desire. Those points make the AR pistol sound very appealing, but there are some drawbacks.
Additionally, regulators may alter or update legal interpretations depending on how new laws are written or court opinions on legal challenges. The legality has not changed for decades. Once you have your tax stamp, you can rest assured that your rifle is legally yours.
